Hello Everyone!! Spring has officially been here for a little over a week. Yippee!! Joe and I retrieved well aged alpaca manure and leaf compost this weekend to make custom seed starting mix. On Wednesday, my niece and nephew helped me screen out the twigs and chunks. We sprinkled in wood ashes too. They were great helpers! Earthworms abounded. We're trying to avoid buying peat moss and experiment with alternatives...keep you posted. I'll be sowing this weekend. I've been travelling too much to sow yet! This farmer is going into overdrive!
I spent Wednesday afternoon chatting with a wonderful neighbor about local issues and history. They are very supportive of our farming ideas and lifestyle. Their enthusiasm reinforces that we're in the right place at the right time. Good neighbors are essential. I am so thankful. Now if I could just get Iris to stop chasing their cats.....
This same neighbor was talking about the local wildlife and dropped a bomb on me. There are coyotes in our hills!!!!! I knew it was possible, but she has seen and heard them numerous times. Apparently their is a wolf around too. I am happy that these critters have the right environment to survive, just surprised that they're around. A new consideration for our livestock ideas!
Besides chatting, I did get some work done on Wednesday! I planted the pussywillow and curly willow that our friend at Harmony Hill Gardens gave me as a bouquet. It rooted in the vase much to our delight. I planted some 40' from Cody Rd. along the drainage channel, and some near the phragmites stand. These are the first woodies to be planted on our farm! I also pruned one apple tree. I love climbing trees, and pruning. I ran out of time to do the rest.

Hopefully I'll get others done. Our neighbor mentioned that the next neighbor down knows the varieties, so I have some pies to make! I'd love to chat with her about those trees.
